The southeast trade winds were unfortunately right on the nose as we dropped the mooring ball in Ile Casy and set off towards the Isle of Pines – New Caledonia. The upwind slog is a small price to pay for being able to visit this fabulous slice of paradise again.

We girls all love a challenge, right? Pushing ourselves beyond our comfort zone helps us grow into better sailors, yes? Rise up to become the best version of yourself, etc, etc. These thoughts all traveled through my mind as I struggled to stay upright in my 15-foot sea kayak while another white-capped wave reared up to test my nerve.

Life on the water is never static. Mother Nature makes sure of that! Even at anchor things are constantly changing; the view as the boat swings, the light on the waves, the sound in the rigging, other vessels arriving or leaving.

In 2015, while checking requests from women wishing to join the Women Who Sail Australia (WWSA) group, I came across one from a woman named Ruth Boydell. When asked if she was involved in sailing, she humbly replied that she had bought a boat in Western Australia and was sailing it back to Newcastle on the east coast

The Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron’s (RMYS) 29th Australian Women’s Keelboat Regatta (AWKR) and Middle Harbour Yacht Clubs Women’s Regatta took place earlier this year. These events are open to women-only crews and mixed crews with female helms.
